Understanding & Upgrading Your Yamaha Boat's WetSounds Stereo System (2018β2025 Complete Guide) πΆ
Hey everyone! If you own a 2018β2025 Yamaha 22', 24', or 25' boat with a WetSounds stereo system and feel like it should sound better β you're right. The factory setup is intentionally limited at the amplifier level, and most owners have no idea. In this guide, we'll break down exactly how the OEM system is designed, where its limitations are, and how JB Solutions lets you upgrade it without cutting a single wire. π
π§ OEM System Components
Let's start with the factory gear. Non-wake 24' and 25' bow-rider boats receive a WetSounds HTX-6 amplifier. Non-wake 22' boats and 25' FSH boats get the HTX-4 amplifier. Wake boats receive both an HTX-6 and an HTX-4 amplifier. All WetSounds-equipped boats come with Recon 6.5" speakers, and if your boat has a subwoofer, it includes the Recon 10" free-air subwoofer. If your boat has tower speakers, those are the WetSounds Icon 8s.
π OEM System Design
The general system design is consistent across all vessels. The interior speakers on all boats are wired in parallel to 2 ohms, paired in left and right channels. The swim deck speakers run on their own dedicated channels. On boats equipped with the HTX-6, channels 5 and 6 are bridged to power the subwoofer. On wake boats, the second HTX-4 amplifier handles the tower speakers.
β οΈ OEM System Limitations
Yamaha made an excellent choice selecting WetSounds as their audio supplier β they produce top-tier marine audio equipment and are widely regarded as one of the best in the industry. However, the amplifiers are the system's major weak point.
These amplifiers are pre-tuned with custom DSP (Digital Signal Processing) software developed jointly by WetSounds and Yamaha. There is no way to retune or bypass the OEM DSP settings without replacing the amplifier entirely. This DSP raises the crossover points and reduces the amplifier's true power output β most likely to minimize warranty claims and protect speakers from being blown by inexperienced users.
To be clear: the OEM system sounds decent straight from the factory. However, if your system sounds absolutely terrible, it's worth contacting WetSounds support or your Yamaha dealer to have your OEM amplifier reprogrammed. A batch of these units left the factory with faulty DSP software, and a simple reprogram may resolve the issue entirely.
π System Improvements
JB Solutions offers upgrade options to either add amplifiers or fully replace the OEM amplifiers β all while retaining full Yamaha Connext functionality. No cutting. No splicing. Just plug-and-play.
Option 1 β Add More Speakers or Subwoofers: Amp Integration Kit β $99.99
Our amplifier integration kit provides three zones of RCA outputs along with a remote turn-on wire. Simply unplug the input harness from your factory amplifier, plug in our harness between the amplifier and the boat-side harness, and you're ready to add an aftermarket amplifier to your system.
This option doesn't fix the limitations of the OEM amplifier but improves overall output by adding speakers and power. Note: this option requires adding speakers and/or a subwoofer, plusΒ running new wiring from the battery to power the additional amplifier.

Option 2 β Full Amplifier Replacement Kit β $149.99
Our full amplifier replacement kit includes the amplifier integration harness plus two speaker output harnesses that allow you to tie directly into the OEM speaker wiring β without cutting or splicing a single wire. This is a direct replacement for the OEM amplifier.
Unless you're going high-power, there's no need to run new power wires β the existing OEM power wiring is sufficient for most amplifier swaps.
Available for three configurations:
Option 3 β Upgrade the Speakers
We do not suggest upgrading the speakers without first upgrading the amplifier. But if you want to go beyond the amp, JB Solutions also offers a plug-and-play speaker harness that makes swapping out your OEM WetSounds Recon speakers a completely no-cut, no-splice process β at just $14.99 per pair.

π Amplifier Upgrade Guide
Before choosing an amplifier, it's important to understand how amplifier power actually works in real-world conditions. Boat stereos are typically run while anchored with the engine off, which means at a lower voltage (12.4v vs 14.4v). Most amplifiers lose approximately 27% of their rated output at lower voltage β JL Audio premium amplifiers being a notable exception. This means the wattage printed on the box is not what your speakers are actually receiving most of the time.
With that in mind, always target amplifier RMS output ratings that exceed the speaker's rated wattage to compensate for this loss. Here's how to think about each speaker type in your system:
Interior Speakers β Recon 6.5"
The OEM Recon 6.5" speakers are rated for 60 watts at 4 ohms. Accounting for the ~27% power loss, aim for an amplifier that outputs over 80 watts per channel at 4 ohms, or 160 watts at 2 ohms. Running the speakers at 2 ohms (which is how they are wired from the factory) means you'll want that 160W figure as your target.
Subwoofer β Recon 10"
The Recon 10" free-air subwoofer is rated for 200 watts at 4 ohms. With power loss factored in, aim for 275 watts at 4 ohms. For subwoofers, it's best to look at bridged power ratings on a 6-channel amplifier (as the OEM setup is configured).
Tower Speakers β Icon 8s
The WetSounds Icon 8s are rated for 150 watts at 4 ohms each. Aim for just over 200 watts per channel at 4 ohms. Like the subwoofer, bridging works very well for tower speakers.
π‘ Pro tip β Towers and Subwoofer: Consider a 6-channel amplifier and bridge each pair of channels β one pair for the subwoofer, one pair for the left tower, one pair for the right tower. This is often significantly cheaper than purchasing a separate 4-channel amplifier and monoblock that put out equivalent power, while simplifying the install considerably.
π Why JB Solutions?
Our harnesses are manufactured to OEM-plus quality standards and produced in the same factory as brands like Pioneer, Kenwood, and Alpine. Every harness is built to meet or exceed OEM specifications β because we're installers and boat owners ourselves, and we wouldn't put anything on our own boats that we wouldn't stand behind completely.
